- Scheduling Horrors
Safeway is really, really poor at scheduling.
My 40 hours a week has dropped to 21. Of course I’ve requested a couple days off this week and my school schedule prevents them from scheduling me on those particular days. However, at least in the deli department, they’ve started decreasing hours a lot. Which is funny… They didn’t have enough people to keep things running so when they finally get two more employees, they drop hours so we’re back to the same problem as before.
And I really need the hours as I’m saving up all my funds for my next phase in life.
They’ll schedule us (like last night grr…) with only two people in the evenings which totally sucks. You need at least three people to keep things running. Last night, the other person working with me took her half hour lunch leaving me by myself. It is not good when there are 30+ customers all waiting for different services. I was running from the sandwich bar to the hot foods to the meats to the register and all over. On a side note: Why would you go up to the cash register when the entire department is obviously busy?
One of the mangers came over to collect the till and, seeing how busy I was, helped out. Maybe that’ll push the deli manger into scheduling properly. I believe she’s trying to save the department money but we actually lose more in sales cause customers don’t want to stand there and wait like that… I also don’t think she understands how bad it gets in the evenings. Whatever. It’s been nice being able to see how things work from this perspective.
The deli manager rescheduled one of my eight hour days from 2-10 in the deli to 6am tomorrow in frozen food. Which I just so happen to know nothing about. Apparently the person who normally did that passed away and they had scheduling issues. Unfortunately this means i have to get up freakishly early and lose 4 hours of work… So now I’m at 17 hours this week. Bleh…
The store manager did hint at the possibility of full-time over there if I do well. Not sure if that’ll be better for me in the end but at least it’ll give me options.
